Knoebels Amusement Park

Knoebels Amusement Park is one of the last of its kind - an amusement park without an admission price. So, it can sponsor events like the Carousel Organ rally by members of the Carousel Organ Association of America. After speaking with several of the owners, some actually hand crank the perforated music sheets over indented paper rollers, I learned that only about 50 old-fashioned pipe organs remain in operation. Some antique organs were at this three-day event while the majority of the organs were modern day devises. I listened to about twelve today.

Some carousel organs were small and others were massive needing to be pulled into position by a truck. These organs provided the music for fairs and carnivals from the late 1800s to just after the Great Depression. They produce sounds ranging from brass trumpets, silver bells, clashing cymbals and beating drums to tones from violin, flute and piccolo pipes. It was an enjoyable outing. We even went on a few rides.
