Guitarists Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo formed Sonic Youth with bassist Kim Gordon in 1981. The New York City band was an unlikely success story with their emphasis on experimental noise and art rock. They endured mainly by refining their sound with every album eventually becoming a popular cult band with many indie groups owning a deep debt to their daring exploration. They've released over 30 CDs, EPs or vinyl LPs over the past 27 years.
