Born on New Year's Day in 1942, Country Joe McDonald enlisted in U.S. Navy before attending college in the San Francisco Bay area. He formed Country Joe and the Fish with guitarist Barry Melton in 1965. After several political albums and high profile stunts like the fish cheer at the original Woodstock, he went solo. He fuses the folk rock sound into lively melodies, chants and ballads. Country Joe McDonald has cut nearly two dozen albums and performed extensively in the ensuing decades.
