FEATURED ARTIST: Michael Nesmith
Forever downplaying his role in the Monkeys, Michael Nesmith did indeed write some great tunes before, during and after that musical juggernaut. In actuality, in 1970 with three year left on his contract he asked to be released from its terms. In granting the request he had to pay a default which amounted to most of the money he earned as a Monkey. His early sound was a mixture of soft country and light folk rock. So, along with Gram Parsons, he is considered one of the pioneers of country-rock. He released a dozen solo '70s LPs along with eight CDs in recent years.
