Portland, Oregon, a Mecca for musicians, claims The Decemberists as another of its singer/songwriter geniuses. The quintet is led by Colin Meloy, a Montana native, who composes story oriented songs backed by a full band or just an acoustic guitar. The sound definitely has a folk rock flavor but it rises above a single style. The Decemberists have released five full-length albums and plenty of EPs since 2001.
